In 1963, the Western Open was played at the Beverly Country Club on the South Side of Chicago. I lived just two blocks from the course. I was 17, and my Dad (an avid golfer his whole life) and I snuck under a fence that surrounded the course and followed Arnie on the final day. As I recall, he won the event in a playoff against Nicklaus - might have been another in the playoff, but the aura and the crowds around Arnie and Jack were just spectacular. We followed him the entire day and I can remember that trademark swing up close - not pretty - not standard - but extremely effective. His signature really. A great memory for me.
